For decades, A Christmas Carol has been a centerpiece of the Omaha Community Playhouse, and few have contributed to its legacy as profoundly as Marilyn Hansen. Her involvement spans from the very first production, where she served as the original props procurer, to performing on stage in roles such as Millie and Mrs. Cratchit. Many of the props she provided in those early years were personal treasures, including antiques from her grandmother, which became cherished pieces of the production for a decade before being returned to her care.

Marilyn’s connection to the show extends far beyond her own performances. Her children, Peter and Christiana, grew up backstage and on stage, learning the craft and contributing to the production’s magic. She recalls moments of awe and amusement, like when Peter was trained to operate the follow spot and even light the Cremora on fire during a scene, or when Jeffrey, Charles Jones’ son, got into typical street urchin mischief backstage. One of her fondest memories was sharing the secret of her pregnancy with the Ghost of Christmas Present and Nell on Christmas Eve, a moment of private joy amidst the bustling production.

Over the years, Marilyn wore many hats at the Playhouse: performer in shows such as Sound of Music, Romanoff and Juliet, and Marat/Sade; stage manager; sound technician; and general set construction. She decorated the lobby for galas and Christmas, ensured the “Ghost” light was on, locked up the theater, and hosted unforgettable cast parties at her Mercer Mansion. She also served on the Board for 23 years, participated in the Guild, and helped with nearly every gala.

Through all her roles, Marilyn embodies the heart of OCP: dedication, creativity, and a love of community. Her stories, whether about sparklers on stage, playful chaos backstage, or decades of building traditions, illustrate the joy, care, and passion that have helped make A Christmas Carol a true Omaha treasure. She reflects on the show as a giant family, one that grows with each cast, crew member, and audience, creating memories that endure for generations.
