For over four decades, Jim Othuse, Greg Scheer, John Gibilisco, and Tim Burkhart have been the unsung heroes behind the magic of A Christmas Carol at the Omaha Community Playhouse. Their creativity, passion, and dedication have transformed the stage into a world of wonder, warmth, and holiday spirit, making the production a cherished holiday tradition in Omaha.

Jim Othuse’s involvement with A Christmas Carol began in the summer of 1976, when he worked closely with Charles Jones to create the original set and lighting designs. In 2006, Othuse redesigned the set and lighting to create a more complete and visually dynamic interpretation of Charles’ adaptation. His designs brought to life all the iconic London locations, including a bustling street scene with a poultry shop, toy shop, and bakeshop, the Scrooge and Marley Counting House, the Fezziwig warehouse, Scrooge’s bedchamber, the modest Cratchit family home, and Fred and Millie’s parlour. Beyond the Playhouse, Othuse also designed sets and lighting for the Nebraska Theatre Caravan touring productions of A Christmas Carol. In the early days of the Playhouse production, he even orchestrated a memorable “flying Scrooge” moment, with actor Dick Boyd lifted 12 feet into the air on a harness to meet Christmas Present atop the bed canopy, an iconic example of Othuse’s ingenuity and commitment to theatrical magic. Every detail of his work, from lighting to scenic design, transports audiences directly into Dickens’ London, creating immersive, unforgettable experiences year after year.

Greg Scheer has been a vital part of the production for many years, serving as production coordinator. His organizational expertise ensures that every aspect of the show runs seamlessly, from coordinating rehearsals to managing technical elements. Scheer’s behind-the-scenes work is essential in bringing the director’s vision to life and creating a smooth, polished experience for both cast and audience.

Tim Burkhart’s award-winning sound design adds another layer of magic to A Christmas Carol. Through innovative sound effects and careful attention to acoustics, he shapes the auditory world of the production, from the ominous clinking of Marley’s chains to the joyous sounds of Christmas morning. Burkhart’s work demonstrates how sound can elevate storytelling and immerse audiences in the emotional world of the play.

John Gibilisco has also been a cornerstone of the production’s sound design. His expertise as a sound designer and production electrician ensures that every note, effect, and subtle cue enhances the storytelling, bringing depth and clarity to the performance. Gibilisco’s meticulous attention to detail creates an immersive experience that perfectly complements the elements crafted by the rest of the team.
