Omaha Community Playhouse awards and recognizes individuals each year for their contributions on and off its stages. Almost 1,000 community members contribute their valuable time and talents each year; our goal is to ensure everyone receives the proper recognition they deserve.
The nomination and voting process was unified and shared with the public in May 2024 to increase transparency to the Omaha arts community.
The Nomination and Voting Process
OCP awards individuals and companies who make a tremendous impact on the organization. Award categories include acting, front-of-house, backstage, and other distinguished awards and impactful contributions.
Eligibility
Those who volunteer or participate in an OCP production are eligible to be nominated for an OCP Award. This includes actors, crew members and front-of-house volunteers. Special events such as contracted productions do not qualify for nominations.
At times, OCP may establish specialty awards for a season that recognize individuals for specific contributions at the discretion of the OCP Executive Director and Co-Artistic Directors.
Nominations
Award nominees are determined by select members of OCP staff and Board of Trustees. Acting award categories could include up to 12 nominees. All other award winners outside of acting awards are determined by OCP staff members.
Below is a breakdown of how nominees are determined:
Actor: Discretion of OCP Co-Artistic Directors, Executive Director and the Board of Trustees Awards Chair with input from guest directors.
Below is a breakdown of who is awarded:
Front-of-House: Discretion of the Box Office and House Managers. Backstage/Crew: Discretion of the Director of Production & Strategy and Production Coordinator, along with the other OCP staff department members. Other Distinguished Awards: Discretion of the OCP Executive Director and Co-Artistic Directors. Impactful Contributions: Discretion of the OCP Executive Director and Director of Development.
Voting
Who Votes? Once nominees are determined, an electronic voting ballot is emailed out to community members who attended five or more OCP shows during that season (excluding contracted, VROOM! and youth production class performances). This also includes OCP staff and Board of Trustees members who attended more than five shows.
The ballot is not shared on social media or to a larger group to ensure voting results stay fair and objective. Voters will have approximately one-to-two weeks to complete the electronic ballot.
Tabulations
Who Calculates the Votes? Once the voting window has closed, OCP Co-Artistic Directors, Executive Director and a Board of Trustees representative calculate the votes and determine the winners of each acting category. Select OCP staff members determine the winners as part of their respective categories.
Questions?
Please reach out to OCP Executive Director Rebecca Noble, or Co-Artistic Directors Susan Baer Collins and Alex Rodriguez with any questions, concerns or feedback to help improve this process!
Please note: In recognition of OCP’s 100th Season, nomination categories may exceed 12 nominees.
